What is a Root Canal?

When food, tartar, and plaque builds up on your teeth, it can allow bacteria to grow and cause decay or infections. If tooth decay is untreated, it could lead to the death of the living tissue that keeps your tooth healthy, and you are at risk of losing your tooth. When you are experiencing such a severe degree of tooth decay or an infection, a root canal treatment can be one of the last options to save your tooth before it has to be extracted.

Do I Need a Root Canal?

This occurs when the inside of your tooth, which contains a material called dental pulp, becomes infected. The dental pulp is where the nerves, blood vessels, roots, and soft tissues necessary to tooth development are.

What Can I Expect During a Root Canal?

Our dentist will thoroughly exam your gum and teeth to locate the source of infection. X-rays will be taken to determine the extent of the infection and if it has extended to the jawbone. Once our doctor determines a root canal is necessary, we will do everything we can to schedule your procedure as soon as possible.

During your root canal procedure, local anesthesia will be injected to gums surrounding the affected tooth. This will numb your mouth and reduce any discomfort or pressure you may experience during treatment. Next, your tooth will be thoroughly cleaned and prepared for the root canal procedure. Our dentist will drill a small hole at the top of the tooth to expose the infected pulp. The pulp is removed and the infection is flushed to remove any bacteria and debris.

Finally, your tooth is thoroughly cleaned and dried and a dental filling is placed over the hole to seal it. In a few weeks, you will return so that a dental crown will be placed over your tooth to fully restore its strength, shape, and overall function.
